Instinct Accessories
The terminology “airsoft gun” seems to contradict itself. You may ask, how can a gun be soft or air soft? The term “soft” comes from the plastic or rubber pellets that are propelled through the air by way of a spring-driven piston compressing a pocket of air. The piston shooting the pellet can be spring, electric or gas powered.
These guns are designed after real firearms so they look very authentic and have only been around since the 1980s, originating in Japan. At that time, it was illegal to own a firearm in Japan, although there was a lot of interest in them. Manufacturers decided to take advantage of that interest and designed replicas of real firearms that were spring-powered to shoot plastic or rubber pellets that were non-lethal.
The shooting mechanism of these guns was soon replaced with gas or battery powered pistons. They then became popular in the United States in the 1990s and there are many manufacturers now in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, to name a few. Probably the most popular type of airsoft gun is the AEG, or Airsoft Electric Gun.
Airsoft is used for training purposes in the military and police units, but mostly it is used for recreational activities. The games played with airsoft guns are similar to those played with paint balls. Players dress up in military style, sometimes even in authentic World War II attire, which would be used in the historical reenactments sometimes played out. Other games may include skirmishes or organized scenarios depending on how many players there are, the location and budget.
Objectives are set in each game and common military tactics are put to use to achieve them in these combat situations. Different types of airsoft guns are used by the combatants in the form of pistols and rifles and usually participants dress in either authentic or replicated military wear.
The difference between airsoft and BB guns is:
1. The ammunition. Airsoft uses 6mm or 8mm plastic pellets, whereas BB guns use metallic pellets.
2. The velocity. The airsoft pellets are shot at a velocity that is less than 700 feet per second (FPS), which is safe to use in controlled gaming and training situations. BB guns have a velocity of over 1000 FPS making them unsafe for these same situations.
3. The “hop up”. This is something that airsoft guns have that BB guns do not, in order to give them better range since the muzzle velocity is fairly low. The system is installed on most of the rifles and pistols, giving the pellet a backspin as it fires from the weapon, helping it to travel beyond its normal distance. This can be adjusted fairly easily during play to get the most distant straight line of fire.
Playing with airsoft weapons in a controlled environment is an adult’s way of acting out an ageless desire or instinct to bear arms, to shoot a live target, to feel powerful or to engage in a precision sport. Whatever the motivating factor, it is a fun recreational activity with safety rules and regulations that are taken seriously to protect all players and observers.
